Printed in Malmö
Malmö's first theatre, operating between 1809 and 1938
Malmö theatre has a longer history than you might think. The house was built in 1809 and then contained both a restaurant and Malmö Theatre. The architects were Anders Sundström, Fritz Jaenecke and Sten Samuelson.
The restaurant, which came to be known as Stadt Hamburg, had a garden that went right down to the canal. Here there was a music stage and outdoor seating.
For 130 years, all the big plays were played here in Malmö. The last performance was given in 1938. By then the Hippodrome had taken over as a theatre venue.
